Above the River Esk in Cumbria, Muncaster Castle has been home to the Pennington family since at least 1208, a fourteenth-century pele tower grown into a grand house amid 77 acres of gardens. A king is said to have sheltered here. A glass bowl he left behind, the Luck of Muncaster, is still unbroken. But the name people whisper in its corridors belongs to a servant: Thomas Skelton, the jester they called Tom Fool.
Legend says Tom sat beneath a chestnut tree by the gates and sometimes sent travelers toward the quicksands of the Esk estuary. Darker stories say he beheaded a carpenter who loved Heloise Pennington as the young man slept in the stables, and that the headless ghost still searches the castle for her. None of it is proven; the earliest written account of his crimes dates to 1825, some two centuries later. Yet in the Tapestry Room, guests describe a deep chill, a child crying by the window, and a woman singing softly in the dark. On the road by the gate, legend places Mary Bragg, murdered in the early 1800s. Skeptics point to cold colors and staring portraits. The stories survive regardless.
Muncaster is open to visitors, its house, gardens, and owl displays drawing more than 90,000 people a year. Book a supervised Ghost Sit in the Tapestry Room. Once the alarms are set, there is no leaving until dawn.

What Others Have Experienced
During an overnight research vigil in the library just after midnight, a ghost hunter and a colleague watched a guide rope suddenly sway with neither of them near it, as their instruments logged a drop of several degrees. In the Tapestry Room his camera’s full battery drained in under twenty minutes, and he left struck by how easily the castle at night could unsettle even a scientific mind.

Arriving late at night for a ghost sit, a guest found the deep quiet, with no traffic or town noise, gave the castle a heavy, isolated atmosphere. They reported a few unexplained occurrences during their overnight stay and woke to sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
