Ten miles from Siler City in western Chatham County, North Carolina, there is a circle in the woods where nothing grows. The circle is forty feet in diameter. The path forming its boundary is about a foot wide and completely bare — no grass, no weeds, no moss — while normal North Carolina forest presses right to the edge and a coarse wiry grass persists inside. The barrenness has been documented in written accounts since at least the early nineteenth century, with oral traditions placing it as predating the founding of the United States. John Harden wrote about it in 1949. Soil studies conducted by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture found extremely high salt content in the path — conditions hostile to plant growth, and evidence of natural salt licks in the area. This is the most scientifically substantive explanation available.
It does not explain why the deposit takes the form of a perfect forty-foot circle with sharp boundaries. It does not explain why objects left on the path overnight are consistently reported to be found displaced by morning. The legend says Satan paces the circle in the dark. Competing explanations offer Native American ceremonial use, a Lost Colony connection, and the old molasses mill theory, which doesn’t survive comparison to actual mill paths. None of them close the question completely. The salt deposit explains the barren ground as far as it goes and leaves the shape unexplained.
The site is off Devils Tramping Ground Road outside Bear Creek and requires booking for overnight stays. Day visitors can walk in without a reservation. Paranormal investigators who have stayed overnight describe the approach — crosses painted on the road, anti-Satan graffiti on trees, religious symbols carved into bark — as evidence of a long tradition of people arriving at this place specifically to engage with whatever it is. Deeper in, past the graffiti, the atmosphere changes. The sound that several investigators report in the surrounding woods is faint and high-pitched and without an obvious source. The ground has been bare for three hundred years. It is still bare.
