The Joslyn Castle rises from Davenport Street in Omaha, Nebraska — thirty-five rooms of Scottish Baronial stone completed in 1903 for the industrialist George Joslyn and his wife Sarah, built with the wealth of the Western Newspaper Union and the ambition of people who had decided to make something permanent. George died in 1916; Sarah remained for decades, eventually bequeathing the family fortune to establish the Joslyn Art Museum. The castle passed through several institutional phases, serving for years as Omaha Public Schools’ administrative headquarters, before coming under the stewardship of the Joslyn Castle Trust. Through every transition, the reports of unexplained activity have continued.
Staff working in the building during its administrative years reported disembodied voices, mysterious music from empty rooms, and footsteps in empty corridors — accounts from people with no investment in the building’s haunted reputation.
