The Bullock Hotel sits at 633 Main Street in Deadwood, South Dakota, on the lot where Seth Bullock and his partner Sol Star opened their hardware store in 1876 and eventually built Deadwood’s finest hotel over that same foundation. Constructed from pink and white sandstone quarried in Boulder Canyon, with a lobby of red velvet, brass chandeliers, and a Steinway grand piano, the building was a statement of ambition in a gold camp turned legitimate town. Bullock — Deadwood’s first sheriff, a man his grandson said could outstare a mad cobra — died of cancer on September 23, 1919, at his ranch near Belle Fourche. By most accounts, he never entirely left.
The paranormal activity reported at the Bullock is extensive and specific. A tall ghostly figure matching Bullock’s description has been seen in the restaurant and basement; activity spikes when staff stand idle or hum — entirely consistent with what his contemporaries said about him in life. Room 211 carries a persistent smell of cigar smoke with no source. In Room 305, a guest alone on the floor heard a male voice ask “Can you hear me?” and later found an unexplained blur in photographs taken beside Bullock’s portrait. Room 313 has produced running water with no tap open and objects appearing on surfaces with no explanation.
